Summer Workshop Schedule
Classes
meet from 9AM-12PM at Seamark in Deer Isle unless otherwise noted
July
3 & 5
Story Mural: Deep Down in the Sea
In this
class, students will begin by drawing from life – sea creatures
and beachcombing treasures. At first, they will zero in on the details
with a variety of media and materials, and then enlarge these to
much bigger than life in a mural full of color and mystery. As a
reminder of this experience, they’ll keep their sketches in
their own small, handmade book to take home. Materials to bring:
one or two special treasures found on the beach (either from nature
or man-made).

Self-Portraits from Salvaged Materials
Students
participating in this class will gather found objects and create
their own “self-portrait”. (Self-portraits began during
the Renaissance, when artists began to ask the question “Who
am I?” Children and young adults ask themselves that question
daily, and begin the process of understanding that a photograph
answers only one part of that question.) Using wire, wood, plastic
and paper, students will build a bust in their own likeness from
these discarded materials. Plan to bring things to incorporate into
the piece; a pedestal and joining materials will be provided.

Prints Flying
This class
is offered in conjunction with the Island Family Theater Arts
Program created by Opera House Arts. The performance series “Live!
For $5” features original live theater on consecutive Wednesday
evenings from 7 to 8 PM during July and August.
On Wednesday
July 11 at OHA, Sebastienne Mundheim
will present her multimedia “Currently Franklin: the Story
of a Paperboy”, an interpretation of Benjamin Franklin’s
life. Seamark's
accompanying workshops will utilize aspects of Franklin’s
creativity: printing and scientific discovery.
Thursday, July
12: Participants will learn about printing techniques
and try some approaches of their own. Using block and ink, cutting
and pasting, screening and pressing techniques, students will
create their own images using newspaper print.
Friday, July 13: Franklin’s experiment
with a kite is one of our most enduring images of this founding
father. Using the pages created in the previous class, participants
will make their own kites, discover the importance of wind, and
experience types of movement in response to air currents (no lightning
is involved!).

Origami Cards*
Origami
is the art of folding paper, and although the name is Chinese, today
this term includes all types of paper folding, Chinese or not. While
there are only a small number of folds that are used in this process,
the combination of these folds will produce very intricate designs.
On the first day of class, students will learn how to fold several
different origami forms, including a peace crane (one of the art’s
best known designs) and butterfly – and because you’re
in Maine, a moose head. On day two, the pieces created in the previous
class will be used to make personalized greeting cards. Depending
on the skill level of the participants, there may be time to create
origami folded mini-scrapbooks.
Instructor:
Karen Galella
Ages:
6 -10

*This
class is offered again on August 13 & 15

Color, Pattern, Cut & Paste
This class
is offered in conjunction with the Island Family Theater Arts
Program created by Opera House Arts. The performance series “Live!
For $5” features original live theater on consecutive Wednesday
evenings from 7 to 8 PM during July and August.
Award-winning children’s
book author/illustrator Ashley Bryan will share an evening of
storytelling on July 25 at OHA. In advance of
this performance, two Seamark classes will be offered utilizing
the “style” of Ashley Bryan’s illustrations.
Monday, July
23: Mary Howe will guide participants through the creative
process of making paste paper, a technique which uses paste, pigment
and mark-making tools to produce colorful, patterned papers. Be
prepared to be messy !
Wednesday, July 25: Jennifer Morrow will show
participants how to use their created “paste-papers”
to create bold, lively collages. Students will experiment with
repeating designs, composition and several cutting techniques
inspired by Ashley Bryan’s illustrations.

Field Sketching
Using the
beautiful light in Maine, and image-rich locations such as Billings
Marina or Sylvester’s Cove, students will draw – not
photograph - the landscapes or seascapes they see. Bring your sketch
book (or one may be purchased at Seamark), pencils or paints and
your own approach to drawing. In the event of rain, students will
use Dave’s newly constructed gallery space as an alternate
location to the outdoors.

Quarryography 2007
This class
is offered in conjunction with the Island Family Theater Arts
Program created by Opera House Arts. The performance series “Live!
For $5” features original live theater on consecutive Wednesday
evenings from 7 to 8 PM during July and August.
In 2006, two talented
and inspired artists began a commission from Opera House Arts
at Stonington’s Settlement Quarry. They endeavored to create
a site-specific, multidiscipline work they called Quarryography.
Alison Chase, founding director of the acclaimed Pilobolus Dance
Theater, and Mia Kanazawa, puppeteer and choreographer, joined
their considerable talents to initiate this work-in-progress which
will continue in the summer of 2007. Seamark will offer a children’s
class that will build on both the historical aspects of the Island’s
granite industry and the creative arts that are evolving from
this effort.
Tuesday, July
31: Jennifer Chase, an artist involved in last year’s
project, will lead children through some of the same exercises
that helped create the first aspect of Quarry-ography. The class
will start at Seamark, and then travel to Stonington to visit
the Granite Museum, where a diorama, pictures and tools will help
children understand what work was done there in days past. Then
it’s on to the Settlement Quarry where found objects, gathered
in a walk around the site, will become part of participants’
own “quarry-ography”.
Please
Note: Tuesday's class meets from 9AM - 1PM. The trips
to both the Museum and Quarry will be conducted RAIN OR SHINE,
so foul weather gear will be needed. There will be a snack break
(provided by Seamark) and a break for lunch (students’ own
brown bag).
Wednesday,
August 1: participants will meet at Seamark to complete
the creation process.
Please
Note: Wednesday's will meet from 9 –11AM.

Art of the Hand
Our hands
are full of creative energy, and the hand has fascinated artists
for hundreds of years (think of Michelangelo’s “The
Creation”). In this class students will begin by making warm-up
drawings based on hands. They will then create a 3-dimension plaster
sculpture of the shape of the inside of their own curved hands,
imbedding objects in the plaster. When the sculpture is dry, color
and a base will be added. Often, these sculptures take on the appearance
of shells or creatures – and are uniquely yours. After this
class, on those really bad days, you’ll have your own hand
to hold! This class is open to adults as well as children, and all
should wear clothes that are “tolerant” of plaster and
paint!

Make Your Own Journal*
In this
workshop, designed to make art accessible, participants will be
reminded that we can create with whatever we have. There’s
no need to wait for the perfect paper, the right thread, or “real”
art supplies to have fun making something special. Bring (or plan
to find) bits of string or ribbon, stamps, cardboard, old pictures,
small toy or medals, little driftwood twigs, stones, shells, etc.
bring them to class. Along with some glue, crayons, and paints,
these items will be all that’s needed to make a personal,
blank book for sketching, writing or scrapbooking. Bring an old
shirt to keep glue and paint off your clothes, and anything you
want to add to your journal. Cover boards, paper and other “stuff”
will be available.

Finding Your Lost Musician: A Workshop
with David Darling
This class
is offered in conjunction with the Island Family Theater Arts
Program created by Opera House Arts. The performance series “Live!
For $5” features original live theater on consecutive Wednesday
evenings from 7 to 8 PM during July and August.
Join David Darling
in this inspirational workshop designed to provide tools for life-long
musical performance and appreciation. Darling has spent 40 years
developing methods that bring people face to face with their own
wondrous and unique sounds and rhythms. He creates a liberating
environment in which each participant has the opportunity to discover
and work with his or her musical abilities.
Working individually and in groups, participants use their voices,
bodies and instruments they play – have always wanted to
play – or want to start playing again. Participants will
leave with a humorous, joyful, and exhilarating sense of their
musical creations. No previous experience in making music is necessary…

Personalized Balsam Pillows
Remember
your first night at summer camp, sleeping in a forest; your first
visit to a New England souvenir shop; or the smell of the holiday
tree? The luxurious and distinctive fragrance of balsam has special
meaning for so many people. During this 2-day workshop, participants
will decorate at least one piece of cloth with textile paint. This
cloth will then be transformed into your very own balsam pillow
– a wonderful reminder of your summer vacation on Deer Isle
for years to come.

Furniture Basics
Deer Isle
sailors traveled far and wide with the sea as their highway, and
wind as their power. Journeys often lasted for months, sometimes
years, and working with wood was both a necessity and a craft. In
this class, students will build a small, usable pine bench, employing
all of the skills that both professional and amateur craftsmen use:
measuring, cutting, drilling, nailing, and planing. Benches can
be personalized using a chip/carve process, and each student will
return to homeport with their own souvenir of travels to Deer Isle.
Wood shop safety skills will be emphasized as well. This class will
meet at the Seamark building, but downstairs in Bruce’s shop.

Polaroid Transfer
Using color
slides and a mini-enlarger, students will “transfer”
the images from the slides to Polaroid film, and then onto wet watercolor
paper. Once the transfers are dry, they will be hand colored, using
watercolors and pastel pencils. The resulting images are not really
a photograph and not exactly a painting, and can be extremely beautiful.
If you have 35mm slides of flowers, animals or landscapes, bring
them to class. Slides will be available for student use. No photographic
experience is necessary – but be prepared to have fun!
