Piñatas
July 15 & 17 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35*/$3
Piñatas were originally clay vessels used in Aztec rituals of offering. They were filled with prized objects for good luck. Now they are used at parties in a festive way. We will each make an animal, person or object. We will use paper maché, vibrant colored paper and paint, plus festive energy to create these piñatas which can be saved or used.
Self-Portraits in Clay
July 22 & 24 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$5
We will explore how to recreate our own faces in three-dimensional form through home-made, no-bake clay, using a variety of colors and shapes. This will be a good exercise in understanding the way our faces are put together, and encourage our hands to make what we see!
Mexican Boxes
July 29 & 31 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35*/$3
Called nichos in Mexico, these sacred shrines have been used to worship loved ones, religious idols, family or anything dear to you. We will make our own mini box shrines using some traditional and recycled materialsfrom tinfoil to beadsto honor something we love: family, pets, nature, etc. Children are invited to bring in small objects or materials that are special to them, though all material will be provided.
Japanese Dragon & Fish Making
August 5 & 7 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$3
Using colorful paper and cloth, we will make traditional 3-D hanging koi fish and/or unfolding dragons. Both creatures can be hung as decoration or used as toys, kites, or puppets.
Dream-Catchers
August 12 & 14 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35*/$3
Native American dream catchers have been said to filter out bad dreams and leave children sleeping peacefully. They were originally inspired by spider webs, which trap ‘bad bugs’. We will make personal dream-catchers using provided materials, as well as some brought in by children. To make the dream-catcher individualized and special, feathers, beads, cloth and string will ensure the most tranquil sleeps.
Flying Birds of Maine
August 19 & 21 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$5
Exploring our own outdoors, we will look at pictures of birds from our state and re-create them from a variety of lightweight materials. The birds we make will be able to hang from the ceiling, so they can always be in flight!
* Register one child and enroll a second child at half price (specially marked classes only)

Furniture Basics (Ages 11 & older)
August 12 & 14 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee/Materials: $65/$10
Deer Isle sailors traveled far and wide with the sea as their highway, and wind as their power. Journeys often lasted for months, sometimes years. Working with wood was a necessity, a craft and a past time. In this class, students will build a small usable pine bench, employing all of the skills that both professional and amateur craftsmen used: measuring, cutting, drilling, nailing, and planing. Benches can be personalized using a chip/carve process, and each student will return to homeport with his/her own souvenir of travels to Deer Isle. Wood shop safety skills will be emphasized as well. Limit 5 students per class.
